COMBAT THINNING HAIR

Feel like your hair isn’t as thick as it once was? It could be down to something simple. Try these tips to get your hair back to its former health.

1. Eat more protein

Yes, up those fish and meat doses as the protein packed foods are great for the hair.

“Try adding up how much protein you consume on daily for a week to get a feel for how much you really need – you may surprise yourself as to how little you really consume.”

2. Loosen up

If you find yourself constantly pulling your hair into Croydon facelift (that’s a tight ponytail), then stop. The same goes for wearing hair extensions and excessive blow-drying, as they’re all putting strain on your hair follicles. In some cases, this can lead to traction alopecia.

Instead, choose a loose hairstyle and try to give your hair a break from heat styling.

3.  Listen to your body

A common sign of a thyroid condition is thinning hair, particularly hypothyroidism which is seen in post-menopausal women. Other symptoms include weight gain, dry skin and tiredness; if you suffer from any of these, seek advice from your doctor.

4. Check your vitamin levels

Two vitamins your hair really loves are Vitamin D and B12; low levels or deficiencies in these can result in slow hair growth or worse, thinning. If you’re worried, ask your Doctor for a blood test to check these levels before you start taking a supplement – just in case there’s an underlying issue.

5. And your iron levels too

Life gets stressful, there’s no doubt about that but add busy lives, heavy periods and eating less meat can lead to low serum Ferritin, a protein that stores iron in the body.

“Low iron is one of the most common causes of hair thinning, so try to reboot it from the inside out by including lean red meat in our diet or take an iron supplement.”

6. Look after your scalp

A healthy scalp = healthy hair. Simple really. Look for products that help to tone the scalp, like American Crew Scalp Fortifying Treatment.

7. Don’t skip conditioner

Not using conditioner can leave to dehydrated hair which becomes brittle and damaged over time. Sally-Anne suggests a lightweight conditioner that contains panthenol and glycerine that moisturise and keep fragile hair strong. We love Bumble & Bumble Seaweed Conditioner. Add in a volumising product to your repertoire, too.

8. If you’re worried, see a trichologist

If your ponytail feels thinner or you can see your scalp more, don’t ignore the warning signs – book in to see trichologist who can help to determine the cause and help you to get on track to regaining your hair.

9. Live healthy

Your hair is a reflection of your health, so if you’re skipping exercise, eating a lot of junk food or overdoing it on the booze, it’ll show on your head. A healthy lifestyle will naturally make your hair look healthy.
